Spain head coach Fernando Hierro has confirmed that Manchester United's under-performing star David De Gea will start between the posts for Spain in their World Cup last 16 clash against Russia,
The group stage performances of the Manchester United man have seen him come under fire, most notably due to his error against Portugal which gifted Cristiano Ronaldo a goal. However, while some have called upon him to be benched for either Kepa or Pepe Reina, Hierro has no intention of doing so, as he showed when asked about the goalkeeper by RNE.
Although the job only became his on the eve of the tournament, the former Real Oviedo tactician also put his foot down by insisting that he wants to leave his own mark on La Roja.
"Yes, he will play. I respect the opinions of everyone but we are the ones who make the decisions and I have a lot of clear ideas about the game against Russia.
"I'm not suffering from anything else that other coaches haven't suffered from: Clemente, Camacho, Vicente del Bosque... The reality of the situation is that now football is very different and there's always debate." Hierro Radio MARCA
Hierro also discussed his side's last 16 opponents and is wary of the physical threat that Russia will pose for his players said: "We know how Russia plays, leading from the front and their aerial balls make them very dangerous. Those are their general characteristics but they are also playing in their own stadium in front of their fans cheering them on.
"But our lads are excited and have been training very well and we're looking forward to the knockout phase." the manager added
