Gen Abdelghani Hamel had led the police since 2010. No reason was given for the 62-year-old’s dismissal but it comes amid a drug-trafficking scandal that has shaken the establishment. The police have denied media reports that the general’s personal chauffeur was involved in smuggling cocaine. However, the force admitted that one of its fleet of drivers had been arrested in connection with the case involving the seizure of more than 700kg (1,540lb) of cocaine from a container ship in May. The shipment, destined for a prominent businessman, came from Brazil and the drugs were found in boxes marked “halal meat”. Pfandergloria June 30,2018 A suspected thief was on Thursday lynched by irate residents at Rianyanchabera village, in Kenyenya, Kisii County. The 25-year-old man was suspected of stealing valuables and cattle from residents. The suspect, identified as Kibeni, is said to have returned home three days ago from his hideout in Trans Mara after he stole his neighbour’s two goats, maize and beans. “Kibeni has been giving us sleepless nights because he has been leading criminal gangs in breaking into houses to steal. We could not leave him to continue staying with us in the village after he returned home,” said Samson Nyachoti, a resident. Nyachoti said angry residents teamed up and the bought petrol which they used to lynch the suspect. He further noted that residents have launched a manhunt for his accomplices who are still at large. The two, who are alleged to have murdered one Harmony Adoboe, have been identified as Josephine Keteku, believed to be the aunt of the victim, and Korsi Tsorgbe, an accomplice. The said quarrel is reported to have occurred between one of the suspects, Josephine, and a supposed close friend. According to a resident, as the quarrel ensued, Josephine’s friend made some shocking statements accusing her of the murder of her niece 10 years ago. The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the command, DSP Folashade Odoro, told newsmen in Osogbo that the incident happened at about 6:30 am, at No 25, Zone 5, Ajetomobi Street, Eko-Ende Road, Ikirun, Osun. According to Odoro, the father of the suspect, Mr Adewale Mark, reported the incident to Ikirun Divisional Police station. Popoola, a 48-year-old father of three and a former staff of the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), tied a rope to a ceiling fan in his room to hang himself. It was gathered that Sule had tricked Aisha, 21, into a bush at Tamawa village in the Kurfi Local Government Area of the state, allegedly slashed her throat with a knife and fled believing she was dead.
