Angry youths allegedly tortured and killed pastor's son for destroying statue in Ebonyi

The father of the deceased has petitioned the state’s commissioner of police on the matter; and an investigation has been opened.

Youths of Ifu-Ogo Nguzu community in Afikpo-South local government area of Ebonyi state have allegedly killed an 18-year-old boy identified as Ezekiel Okon Ikwor, for allegedly pulling down the statue of the community’s late traditional ruler, Ezeogo Chima Onu, Punch reports.

The deceased accidentally pulled down the statue while preaching in the community. He was the son of the pastor of Seed of Christ and Fire Ministry, Okon Ikwor; and the church is located within the community.

It was gathered that after pulling down the statue, the deceased was tied down by the youths who reportedly tortured him mercilessly, till he died.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, an eyewitness claimed that the irate youths also proceeded to the residence of the deceased’s father; setting two bungalows ablaze. The source said: “The boy was tortured under the supervision of a royal father in the area (name withheld); and in the process, he died in the late hours of the night.

“When the youths discovered that the boy had died, they buried him secretly without the consent of the father and since then, the father has been denied access to the graveyard of the son.”

The public relations officer for the Ebonyi state Police Command, Loveth Odah, reportedly confirmed the incident and said it is being investigated. Pastor Okon Ikwor, father of the deceased, has also petitioned the state’s commissioner of police, Titus Lamorde, on the matter.

He pointed out that he had not just lost his son, but had also lost all his property, which had been destroyed by the rampaging youths. He called on the CP to ensure that the suspected killers are arrested and prosecuted.
