Why Ex-Uefa Head Has Been Released Over Qatar World Cup June 19,2019 Michel Platini, the former head of European soccer association Uefa, was freed in the early hours of Wednesday after having been questioned over the awarding of the 2022 Fifa World Cup soccer tournament to Qatar. Platini's lawyer, William Bourdon, said his client was innocent of all charges and that he had been questioned on "technical grounds." France's national financial prosecutor's office, which specialises in investigating economic crimes and corruption, has been leading a probe into the awarding of the 2022 tournament to Qatar. It is looking into possible offences including private corruption, conspiracy and influence peddling. Platini is one of France's most famous sportsmen and soccer stars. He led France to victory in the 1984 European Championship and played in two World Cup semi-finals.

January 31, 2019 China and the United States are ahead of the global competition to dominate artificial intelligence, the UN World Intellectual Property Organisation published on Thursday. The study found US tech giant IBM had, by far, the biggest AI patent portfolio, with 8,920 patients ahead of Microsoft with 5,930 and a group of mainly Japanese tech conglomerates. China accounted for 17 of the top 20 academic institutions involved in patenting AI and was particularly strong in the fast-growing area of “deep learning”, a machine-learning technique that includes speech recognition systems. “The US and China obviously have stolen a lead. “They’re out in front in this area, in terms of numbers of applications and in scientific publications,’’ WIPO Director-General, Francis Gurry, told a news conference.
