Keyamo blames Atiku for America’s slide on TI’s corruption index

January 31, 2019 The Director, Strategic Communications, Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), says one of the reasons the United States dropped on the Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index was that the US gave the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, a visa. Keyamo said this in a tweet while reacting to America’s slide on TI’s corruption perception index. The spokesman, who posted a link to TI’s report said, “Anything that gravitates towards Atiku is always tainted with corruption. Now, the US gives him a ‘special waiver’ as a candidate to come in for a few days and see the result. The senior advocate had in the past alleged that the US had secretly indicted Atiku for corruption hence the former Vice-President’s reluctance to travel. Keyamo had dared Atiku to travel to US and see if he would not be arrested. However, when Atiku travelled two weeks ago, Keyamo said the PDP candidate paid a lobbyist to help him trave

The 35-year-old speaker of Venezuela’s opposition-controlled National Assembly declared himself interim president during nationwide protests against Maduro’s rule recently. January 31, 2019 Dozens of Indonesians who served jail time for corruption are running for public office, the electoral agency said on Thursday, as the world’s third-largest democracy gears up for national polls. The 49 candidates belong to more than half of the 16 political parties contesting April elections, including President Joko Widodo’s Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle. Half a dozen represent Gerindra, a party led by former military general Prabowo Subianto, who is challenging Widodo for Indonesia’s top job, according to the General Elections Commission. They’re among more than 8,000 people vying for seats in parliament and regional councils, with 192 million registered voters eligible to cast a ballot on April 17. The Southeast Asian nation is riddled with corruption at all levels of society and its House of Representatives is widely viewed as one of its most graft-hit institutions. Legislative hopefuls must publicly declare their previous convictions to stand for office

To delay Brexit, UK may have to pass necessary laws, says foreign minister

Image
January 31, 2019 Britain may need to delay Brexit to pass legislation to implement the split with the European Union, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said Thursday. As the March 29 withdrawal date looms, the government is still trying to convince MPs to support a version of the divorce deal it has agreed with the bloc. Even if it is passed, legislation putting the treaty into effect would then have to go through both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. “If we ended up approving a deal in the days before March 29 then we might need some extra time to pass critical legislation,” Hunt told  BBC radio. “But if we are able to make progress sooner then that might not be necessary. We can’t know at this stage exactly which of those scenarios would happen.” The government is considering extending parliamentary hours and cancelling the February holiday of MPs to allow more time to debate Brexit legislation. But there are still eight laws needed to prepare for Brexit, not just on the deal

China accounted for 17 of the top 20 academic institutions involved in patenting AI and was particularly strong in the fast-growing area of “deep learning”, a machine-learning technique that includes speech recognition systems. “The US and China obviously have stolen a lead. “They’re out in front in this area, in terms of numbers of applications and in scientific publications,’’ WIPO Director-General, Francis Gurry, told a news conference. US President Donald Trump has accused China of stealing American innovations and technology and has slapped trade tariffs on $234 billion of Chinese goods to punish Beijing. China said i
